Your sixth Birthday
Today you’re 6. To be honest you’re so mature I initially typed “today you are seven.”
This year was a big year for a change - you experienced so much and you rolled with so many punches. I am proud of that but I take only partial credit. Audrey, you are so independent and so passionate in standing up for what is right and what is fair. Time after time you mention you want to be doctor or a dance teacher when you grow up. I have a feeling a position fighting for the justice system or politics, perhaps even engineering might be calling you in 25 years or so.
You are still pretty tall for your age, but compared to the rest of your kindergarten class you’re about “equal” with the rest of the tall kids. Your hair is still very blonde and curly & your skin is sweet and fair. The other day you said “mom, when I get into my blankets at night and I turn off all the lights you and look under the covers you and I are the same color.” It is adorable how you are learning we are different after a tumultuous last year. Still I’m awe inspired that you’ve learned the hard way to always acknowledge that you are still half black. I think this year your eyes changed the most they are rarely ever blue and now they are light green or gray depending on what you’re wearing and require glasses every single day.
You still take naps, this weekend you put yourself down for a nap. This is my favorite quality you have and I love when you nap because it gives you time to rest and your father and I time to watch movies without G ratings. Still doubt it’ll last until you’re 7 but here’s to hoping.
You are still incredibly Epicurious for a 6 year old. Whether you know you’re helping the world or not you prefer to eat plants over meat. Your typical pizza order is red sauce, light cheese, mushrooms, olives, basil, with pesto drizzle. Your favorite foods are roasted broccoli, steak, edamame, peppers, and you finally tried macaroni and cheese for the first time this year and liked it - if it’s homemade, you’ll eat it.
You learned to read this year, you took a class over the summer with Regis University online and you went from only knowing the sounds of letters to reading at a mid first grade level. We are consistently inspired by how hard you work. First progress reports you maintained an A average which was hindered mildly by your consistent need to talk to friends and often play around at school. You get that from your mother and I despise that for you. You don’t watch much TV or many movies often (so I can’t name a favorite) You saw a high school adaption of The Wizard of Oz a month ago and coupled with Wicked a few years ago the theater bug has certainly bit you, you love televised live musicals and just recently watched Annie and Hairspray.
As far as best friends are concerned, probably still only Everly, Joey, Lexi & Harper. You haven’t made any “best friends” up here. You’ve had a lot of play dates with new friends I’ve met via my friends, and I see potential in some of them becoming good friends. You seem to play every day at school with someone new. You love making new friends, it makes you so happy. You’ve entered the age where bullying is a thing and as much as I despise it, you’re navigating it with grace like rain. People aren’t always going to think the best of you, which is humbling - treating others with respect is so important so keep it up.
In the middle of the year we moved to South Jordan Utah for mom’s work. You joined a Girl Scout Troop that meets outside because we’re still in a pandemic. You’ve been very active this year. So far you’ve taken swim, gymnastics, jump rope club, and for your birthday you took ski lessons. You loved all of them equally and were so very brave. We love how flexible you are and willing to always try new things. This year you traveled to Atlanta & North Carolina for a semi family reunion and you enjoyed every second of it.
Your imagination is limitless. You have an growing hunger to learn new things and then absorb everything you can about them. You’re filled with facts about Jesus, food, traveling, culture, strong women and men and science. You are a sponge in the best way. You are more than what I prayed for, certainly everything I dreamed of. Grateful to be your mama.
Happy Birthday my darling girl,
Your Mama, Capri
