Your Seventh Birthday
Today you are 7 years old. Typing that sentence partially brings me to tears because I remember the days I was 7. I remember my first grade teachers and this year, at 31 is the first year it’s a tiny bit blurry who my best friends were. You have grown so very much in the last year. Let’s get into it.
Physically, you’re still that girl with highlighted blonde curls you actually cut off 14 inches of those curls and donated them to wigs 4 kids when you found out your great papa had cancer. We’ve loved seeing your short haired personality shine. Green eyes more days than gray, blue seldom if ever appears anymore. You’re very tall and so strong. This year you did gymnastics again and when school started you moved over to a kids Gym. You don’t love PE but you love kidstrong and I love that for you.
This summer was big, you ambitiously chased your goal of the AR shirt you didn’t earn before Kindergarten ended and two weeks ago, you finally earned it. You ran into your former teachers class to show her, you were so proud of yourself and you earned it. 921, you sold almost 1,000 Girl Scout cookies your first year as a Girl Scout, we were beaming. With your cookie money you went to Horseback riding camp or “Try it you’ll like it mini + horses” and had your first experience camping in the woods with new friends and doing your favorite thing - riding horses. You loved it and can’t wait to go back and try other camps.
You seem to have lost enough teeth (hopefully it slows down.) They’re all growing beautifully and it’s a good thing because I’ve missed that smile. Speaking of smiles - you smile a lot more this school year. We championed a bullying problem at the beginning of the year and it helped you met two very very good friends with similar personalities to help you ease into 1st grade. In the beginning when I met them both I didn’t know how 3 “girl bosses” could be best friends but I’ve realized with the women I work with - strong women travel in packs so it’s good for your spirit. Westlyn and Penelope bring you so much joy and it’s so nice not hearing sad playground stories every day for the first time in awhile.
You are so so so so so smart, and so so so so so sassy. To be fair, you’re the perfect mix of both - which is actually unfair to me because you and I go rounds, you are still more than I ever expected and every answered prayer I’ve sent up. Thankful for your heart, it’s so giving. You are such a good kid. You always look out for others, share with others, love on and encourage others. You have a knack for ensuring everyone’s included and no one feels left out. You’re funny and witty and so advanced I spend a lot of time reminding you you’re only 6, now 7. One day - years from now when you have your adult life - I look forward to the stories of how you conquered problems to get results.
I am most proud of how deeply your heart is rooted in Christ. You make decisions that honor him in most situations because of him. You love to worship and learn about God. You’re quick to pray for others when they’re hurt or need healing, lean into what people are calling on God for and stand in that truth for him. May you always trust him.
Your favorite foods are…salad, beets, pickles, and olives sometimes a simple grilled cheese? You tried them for the first time this year and you LOVE them. Also a big edamame fan, nothing has changed there. I told your dad if you grow up a vegan it won’t completely shock me. You are really into science and baking shows - love that for you. You’re a great swimmer, very passionate about tennis, and made your first friends this year in the neighborhood who you catch up with often, from June to Collette you have really created good bonds and I love that for you.
This next year your life is going to change. To be fair, on your own request - you’re finally getting the sibling you’ve been asking us for (lately, almost every day.) I cannot wait to write this letter to you next year noting the bigger girl you’ve become, the big sister you are. You are the most considerate, compassionate, and caring little girl I’ve ever met and I can’t believe you’re mine - your father, brother, and I are so very blessed to call you ours and I can’t wait to watch you grow up together.
All my love, forever & 7 days -
Your Mama
