Your ninth birthday
Audrey, Audrey, Audrey.
You are hilarious, beautiful, witty, intelligent, and passionate. You are so much fun.
Today you’re 9 years old. A coworker stopped me and said, “I’m so happy you’ll spend the day with her tomorrow because when she’s 18, she won’t want to spend her whole birthday with you.” And that’s so true. I’ll have to share my time. This is your last single-digit birthday.
You lost a tooth this week, and it wasn’t even a big conversation. You just lost it. When it comes to looks, Utah gave you freckles—they’re all over. Your eyes are still a hazy green, and your golden locks are growing browner by the day. You still have beautiful streaks of blonde, and I love them. You’re very tall but still in a booster seat. Maybe you’ll outgrow it by 10. I’m proud of you for letting me keep you safe.
You started 3rd grade at an incredibly conservative Christian school that didn’t require anyone to follow biblical values except you—so we left. You joined your first charter school, which is an intense dose of modern reality and conversations you’ve never experienced before. May you weather the storms and come out as strong as you always have.
Since we moved from South Jordan to South Ogden, you don’t have tons of best girl friends, but your closest friend is Sam. We love his parents, his family, his baseball games, and his kind heart. You absolutely love playing with him, which is enough for us. He’s a great friend to have.
You still live in a world only Audrey gets to manifest. You’re passionate about politics and animal rights. You voted in your own student election and receive a weekly jr email like a New York Times meets time magazine weekly and you love reading about current events. You love Jesus, which is such a huge win. This year, you gave your life to Christ and got baptized. You are obsessed with your brother. He thinks you’re cool—conditionally. Let’s remember all the times he begs you not to pick him up when, next year, he thinks you’re best friends.
This year, you auditioned for a role in a show choir and knocked it out of the park. You even filmed your first music video—you are so talented. I hope you always know what a gift you and your voice are to the world. You’re really, really good. Speaking of being really good, you’re back up there… you sold 800 boxes of cookies again this year, perhaps before we know it you’ll be at 1000, you bridge over next year so who know what times will be.
Wicked the movie came out this year. You saw it with your bama, myself & my friend Courtney and immediately when it ended you asked me to ask Courtney if she’ll join us again next year. You love wicked more now than ever before and I am thrilled for you to enjoy it even now that you’re older.
You watched Gilmore Girls with me through Season 4 this year. I can’t wait to watch it again when you’re older, and the college seasons and humor make more sense to you.
You’re into doing things with your hands: sewing, cooking, crafting, drawing, stickers. You’re always busy making something. I love that.
Another year has passed without cavities, broken bones, broken hearts, or broken glasses—but you still have the glasses! You’re the girl who never stops asking for more, and none of it is material. You’re the least materialistic person I know, which is surprising since you’re so into high fashion. But you’re respectful and humble. Please don’t ever change.
I love you so much, and I love being your momma.
Love, Capri
